Can anyone help me understand this Jane Austen resurgence? Where did all these Austen fans come from? I’m all for novels written by ladies, but anybody with eyes knows Wuthering Heights knocks the socks off Austen’s best work with its hands tied behind its back.

The Pretty Bird 
Can’t explain it. Just came here to say a) guilty and b) it probably has something to do with movies and the amazing force of sexuality that is Colin Firth. More Austen films have been made (even that Keira Knightley abomination) than Bronte. I mean, the last Wuthering Heights adaptation I can think of starred Laurence Olivier. As amazing as he is, that’s a long time ago….
If I remember correctly from my undergrad lit days soooo many years ago, Jane brings all of her stories to a satisfactory and cheerful conclusion, or at least most of them. Perhaps, it’s this wishful thinking that we like so much in our time of existential dread. All I know is that after I read her books, I began walking with a limp along the moors in a dark and brooding fashion constantly chastizing in my mind the reading public for not prefering a sensitive and deeply troubled fellow like me.

Yeah, Colin Firth is delicious. (Though I like him best as Uncle Jamie. (“I hate Uncle Jamie!”)) Austen definitely published more books than the Brontes, and they’ve definitely been more readily Hollywood adaptable.
And I don’t not like them. I just don’t love them.
